Clean Air

K&N Air Filter Install

story and photos by Trent Riddle

K&N Engineering may have entered the market in the motorcycle end of the motorsports business, but now they offer air and oil filters for virtually every make of car and truck. Here you see an air and oil filter for a 1981 Jeep CJ5..

Clean air is vital to a well performing engine. If you don’t get enough air, the motor will choke. If you have a carbureted engine this air restriction can even cause your engine to run rich, smoke and foul the plugs. This rich condition will use more fuel and produce less power, all due to a dirty air filter.

Usually this scenario isn’t a problem with a stock air filter, as long as it’s clean that is. Stock paper filters tend to clog easily in dusty conditions, and mud or water will ruin them quick as can be.

K&N replacement filters flow more air when dirty than many stock paper filters flow brand new. This can mean an increase in gas mileage and performance from the moment you install one. One thing is sure, you’ll definitely get more air to the motor, with a performance air filter, after a weekend of ‘wheeling in the dirt. Another great thing about K&N Air filters is that they are reusable. Simply remove the filter and wash and then re-oil the filter element to get the same filter efficiency as when it was new. Don’t even try this with a stock paper filter.

K&N Engineering makes air and oil filters for almost any stock application you can imagine. They also offer complete intake systems for many applications that greatly improves your engine’s power.

1. As with any filter change, the first step is to remove the filter cover and take out the old filter. It’s a good idea to also clean out any dirt, grit, etc. that may have accumulated inside the filter can.

2. With the old filter out, the new filter simply drops in place. K&N has a wide range of filters to match your stock paper filter’s dimensions.

3. With the K&N filter in place, the filter cover is reinstalled and the warning sticker is placed on the filer cover. This sticker tells those helpful folks at the instant lube to NOT toss out your K&N filter when it looks dirty. These filters are reusable.
